Monday, April 14, 2025

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has marked the festival of Baisakhi by paying tribute to the British Sikh community and celebrating their role in shaping modern Britain. In a statement released on 13 April 2025, the Prime Minister expressed deep appreciation for the community’s enduring contributions to the nation’s social, cultural and economic life.

Starmer described British Sikhs as “a source of immense pride” and “a force against bigotry and injustice”, recognising their long-standing values of service, resilience and unity. He said the values celebrated during Baisakhi — equality, hard work and standing up for what is right — reflect the very ideals that strengthen the UK's diverse democracy.

The message reinforced the government’s commitment to championing inclusion and celebrating the many faiths and cultures that make up the UK. Starmer highlighted the contributions of Sikh key workers, business owners, volunteers and public servants, noting their impact across the NHS, education, charity work and entrepreneurship.

“On Baisakhi, we honour the rich heritage of the Sikh community and all that you have given to this country,” Starmer said. “Your values continue to inspire us all, and your commitment to service is a guiding light in our efforts to build a fairer society.”

Baisakhi is a major celebration for Sikhs, marking the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 and the spring harvest festival in Punjab. Across the UK, thousands took part in gurdwara services, processions and community meals (langar), showcasing the spirit of unity and generosity that defines the celebration.

Community leaders welcomed the Prime Minister’s message, calling it a meaningful gesture that reflects the government’s recognition of British Sikhs not just during festive occasions, but in national life year-round. Local councils and mayors across the country also issued messages of support, joining in the celebration and reaffirming their dedication to religious freedom and equality.

As the UK continues to grapple with rising intolerance and division in some quarters, many see Baisakhi as a timely reminder of the strength found in shared values and mutual respect. With British Sikhs contributing across generations and sectors, Starmer’s message serves as a public reaffirmation that diversity remains a cornerstone of the nation’s future.
